What is Akashic Records from the Vedic Philosophy Perspective?

Question:

Regarding Srila Prabhupada’s description of the outer coverings of the earth — the layers of mind, ego, and intelligence — could this layer be considered the realm of the Akashic records?

Answer:

In the scripture Srimad-Bhagavatam, there is a diagram called srsti-lila describing creation. The Brahma-samhita also discusses these topics. The Akashic record is indeed like a database that stores information such as thoughts and impressions.

For example, every person’s fingerprint is unique. If someone injures their finger and the fingerprint is damaged, after about a week it returns to the exact same pattern. Every seven days we grow new skin, yet the fingerprint pattern remains the same. Even if you destroy it, it regenerates identically. The same is true of the iris of the eye. A person’s appearance may change, but the DNA does not. Therefore, a person’s past, present, and future must be stored somewhere in a kind of database.

People are born every day — yesterday, today, tomorrow — yet no two fingerprints are identical. That uniqueness must be stored in some subtle repository. The Akashic record is material, though perhaps connected in some way to the spiritual realm, allowing one to understand how wondrous the Lord’s creation is.

In the Srimad-Bhagavatam, there is a story in which Krishna takes Arjuna upward through layers of darkness. Krishna uses His cakra as light to illuminate the path. Eventually they see Narayana, who reveals that He Himself stole the brahmana’s sons in order to gain the opportunity to see the Lord.

Similarly, when Krishna narrates the stories of Ekadasi — for example, when Narada asks Brahma about Ekadasi — He has access to that dialogue. For Him, accessing such information is effortless. He is omnipotent.

Why would He establish such a “database”? So that no one can complain, “Krishna, I don’t remember.” Krishna could say, “I have the record. Your thoughts are all recorded. You may have forgotten, but I have not.” Therefore no one can cheat or claim forgetfulness as an excuse.

Krishna is extremely patient. Even though living beings constantly forget Him, He repeatedly comes to request that we accept Krishna consciousness and take shelter of Him. Otherwise there is no peace of mind and life is full of anxiety and distress.

On Mind and Creation

The mind is beyond akasha (ether). Scientists currently believe that about 70% of the universe is dark matter, yet they do not truly understand the universe — which troubles them. But we are not confused, because the Srimad-Bhagavatam explains clearly: in dark matter there is no light.

Akasha is a material element. From it evolved air, fire, water, earth — moving from subtle to gross. Scientists struggle to understand this because it transcends ordinary logic. To understand the Bhagavatam, one must relinquish mundane logic. The Lord is everywhere — this cannot be reduced to conventional reasoning. Yet it can be supported by inference and higher reasoning.

Faith in sastra (scripture) is therefore essential.

Descriptions of the material world may appear to change, but truth itself should not change. That is why we cannot be happy in this material world. Only surrender to Krishna brings real happiness; otherwise there will always be trouble.

Layers Beyond the Earth

The layered coverings beyond the earth cannot be seen with gross eyes. Only a person with faith can perceive them.

Consider a bunch of grapes. From outside you see only grapes packed together. But if you remove them one by one and look inside, you see a finely arranged structure. This intelligence continues — from vine to grape, from seed to new vine. One might ask: how does this happen? It was not arranged at the previous step; it was arranged since the very beginning.

The same applies to bananas, peanuts, grains. How many grains grow each year? Billions. Does the earth lose weight from producing them? Does it become heavier? These wonders happen before our eyes.

Plants have no visible brain, no processor, no memory — yet they manifest in orderly ways. Therefore there must be a subtle body within them. And this is only Krishna’s material energy. How then can we comprehend His spiritual energy?

Thus what the Srimad-Bhagavatam says is true — ultimate truth — not requiring external validation. Krishna is inconceivable, beyond logic, all-pervading.

Just as every atom is unique — like license plates in different countries — who is managing all this? Just as vehicles are registered by authorities, fingerprints and atoms must also be overseen. Krishna says He controls everything.

Krishna’s Immanence

Krishna is everywhere — in bananas, grains, everywhere — watching us. He is closer than our own soul. But due to ignorance we forget.

We are like a baby having a nightmare; the mother comforts the child until it sleeps peacefully. Krishna is like that mother, always beside us. But we must wake up from the dream.

Who wakes us? Our guru. He shakes us: “Wake up! Open your eyes!”

That is why we observe Ekadasi, chant, and learn to see Krishna everywhere. We should not depend only on seeing with our eyes — that is our first mistake. We must learn to hear. Hearing is superior to seeing.

The guru-parampara comes from the spiritual world. They know how to teach without wasting resources.

On Modern Science and Scripture

Modern science spends billions yet still does not fully understand gravity. There is confusion and misinterpretation. Hopefully one day scientists will read the Bhagavad-gita, the Srimad-Bhagavatam, and Caitanya Caritamrta.

Today we are working on translating a twelve-volume commentary on the Vedanta-sutra written by a saint known as the second Madhvacarya, recommended by Srila Prabhupada. It was originally in Sanskrit and will be translated into English and other languages so universities can access it. It addresses misunderstandings and explains topics such as akasha, gravity, supernovas, black holes, dark matter, and dark energy from a sastra perspective.

Modern theories are incomplete because they rely solely on sensory perception.

Ekadasi and Tilaka

Ekadasi is described in scripture — for example in the story of Ambarisa Maharaja and by Madhvacarya. Modern intermittent fasting like 16:8 resembles this, yet people do not look to scripture for its deeper meaning and understanding.

Tilaka, though appearing to be simple clay, is a conscious element that purifies and protects. One day people may understand this scientifically.

Sri Caitanya’s Compassion

Sri Caitanya left His mother and wife after His father’s passing — not out of cold-heartedness, but out of compassion for all living beings. He accepted initiation from Isvara Puri though He did not need to, just to set an example.

He sent Srila Prabhupada to America at an advanced age, with no money, protecting him repeatedly. Beyond the Hare Krishna mantra, nothing else is needed. The guru-parampara will continue. One day we will realize these multiple layers of existence and consciousness.
